The Spellbound Quilted Witch Hat Pattern by Melissa Mortenson of Polka Dot Chair is a Halloween sewing pattern for making a structured witch hat in three different styles, including simple, quilted, and patchwork versions.
The finished hat measures approximately 16" tall by 20" wide, with a 22"-23" interior circumference designed to fit most adults. Instructions are included for slightly adjusting the fit. Choose a single favourite Halloween print for the classic version, add quilting for extra texture, or piece the top from 2½" strips for the patchwork version.

Fabric Requirements:
All Views
- 1 Fat Quarter or ½ yard fabric for sash, or 2 yards of 1½"-wide wired ribbon
- 1½ yards 20"-wide Pellon Flex Foam Single-Sided Fusible or Soft and Stable
- ¾ yard heavyweight fusible interfacing, at least 20" wide
Views 1 & 2
- ¾ yard fabric for hat top and brim
- 1¼ yards fabric if using a directional print*
- 1 additional Fat Quarter or ½ yard fabric for bias binding on brim edge
- ¾ yard fabric for hat lining
- 1 additional Fat Quarter or ½ yard fabric for bias binding on centre of brim
View 3: Patchwork
- ¾ yard total assorted fabric for hat top, cut into 2½"-wide strips
- Eight 2½" x WOF strips are required
- ¾ yard fabric for hat brim
- 1 additional Fat Quarter or ½ yard fabric for bias binding on brim edge
- ¾ yard fabric for hat lining
- 1 additional Fat Quarter or ½ yard fabric for bias binding on centre of brim
Additional Supplies:
- Basic sewing supplies
- Quilt ruler with 45-degree marking
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Basting spray or quilter's safety pins
- Glue pen
- Pins or binding clips
- Tracing or tissue paper for tracing pattern pieces
Light and medium-weight cotton and cotton-blend fabrics are suitable, with quilting-weight cotton recommended. Stretch fabrics are not recommended.
*For Views 1 and 2, additional yardage may be required when using a directional fabric if the print does not run parallel to the selvage.
