Whale Watching - Quilt Pattern - Elizabeth Hartman

Whale Watching by Elizabeth Hartman is a playful ocean-inspired patchwork quilt filled with colourful whales, narwhals, orcas, and their tiny fish friends. With six different whale designs and plenty of opportunities to combine prints and solids, it’s a fun way to create an entire underwater world in fabric.

Choose from a 48" x 48" small quilt featuring two each of the Narwhal, Beluga Whale, Humpback Whale, Sperm Whale, Blue Whale, and Orca blocks, or a 70" x 86" large quilt featuring six of each. The whales and fish are made with a combination of Fat Eighths and Fat Quarters using conventional patchwork techniques, with no templates or paper piecing required. Because the pattern uses some small pieces, it is recommended for quilters comfortable with rotary cutting and patchwork piecing.

• ⅛ yard light solid detail fabric
• 2⅜ yards background fabric
• 3¼ yards backing
• ⅜ yard binding
• 52" x 52" batting

Large Quilt – 70" x 86"

• 36 whale & fish fabrics divided into 6 colour groups
• ⅛ yard eye fabric
• ⅜ yard light solid detail fabric
• 5⅝ yards background fabric
• 5¼ yards backing
• ¾ yard binding
• 74" x 90" batting

For Each Whale & Fish Colour Group:

• 1 Fat Eighth Whale Fabric 1
• 1 Fat Eighth Whale Fabric 2
• 1 Fat Quarter Whale Fabric 3
• 1 Fat Quarter Whale Fabric 4
• 1 Fat Eighth Whale Fabric 5
• 1 Fat Eighth coordinating Fish Fabric

For best results, each colour group can be arranged from lightest to darkest, while the coordinating fish fabric can be slightly different in tone for extra contrast and interest.
