Pat Sloan's Splendid Sampler - 100 Blocks of Fun!
Have you heard of Pat and Jane's Splendid Sampler?
It's a year long, 100 block Epic Adventure of quilt making started by Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson.
Pat and Jane invited 83 of some of the best designers out there, including Vanessa Christenson, Brigitte Heitland, Kate Spain and many more!
- 2 mystery blocks are unveiled each week on Sunday and Thursday.
- Each block has multiple techniques, such as pieced -> applique -> embroidery -> english paper piecing -> paper piecing.
- There's no supply list. Use what's in your stash!
- It's recommended you use at least 30 fat quarters.
- There are a lot of great giveaways and tutorials.
You can see the calendar/schedule for each designer here.
I had a hard time deciding what colours to do and still don’t really know where it will take me.
My first block, Hearts Aflutter, was the first time I’ve done applique. I think it turned out a lot better than I thought it would.
My second block, Wings is a great testament to small scrappy block piecing. The block was pretty easy (except for the small pieces) and had some great instructions.
I’m not sure about my colour choices for this one.
That being said, I’m not going to redo my blocks; 100 is a lot and you won’t notice it in the long run!
I love (love, love, love!) my third block, Lots of Love, but it was a toughy for me.
There's a lot of itty bitty pieces that I wish I would have hand pieced.
However, I think It turned out great and really like the colours. I want to keep it going by adding a bit of colour to the new block while keeping and incorporating colours from the previous blocks.
Please note for block three - read the tutorials from the designers! I wish I would have followed it from the start, because using starch helped SO much.
The Splendid Sampler community is wonderful as well!

I really am so happy to be part of this endeavor. I love everything and anything that is a challenge, whether it’s a block pattern or improving it out.
This is a great learning experience in so many techniques and I really look forward to every block that is coming out! Great job Pat and Jane for bringing a glorious community even closer together!
See you all, and good luck on the project if you choose to accept the challenge! ~Alicia
